If your business is a sole proprietorship that has employees or if your business is a partnership, limited liability company or corporation, you must get a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN). You will use this number on all business-related forms you send to the IRS.

To get an EIN, send IRS Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number, to the IRS address in the instructions to the form. This form is available in the appendix, on the IRS’s website at www.irs.gov or at all IRS and Social Security offices. There is no charge to get an EIN.

If you apply for your EIN by mail, it usually takes several weeks to process your application. If any tax filings are due before you get your number back, write applied for on the filing in the space for the EIN. If you need the number more quickly, you may call the IRS at 866-816-2065 and request an EIN (make sure you fill out the form first; you'll have to read the answers to the representative over the phone). You will then mail the filled-out SS-4 form to the IRS.

If you have more than one business, you need a different EIN for each. If you change the form of your entity, such as from a sole proprietorship to a corporation, or from a partnership to a limited liability company, you must get a new EIN.
